If you’re wondering when to take a night tour of Berlin, this is your moment. Once a year in October, Berlin turns into an open-air light art gallery. Where? At the Festival of Lights. In this way, some light is added to the days which are turning into nights quicker and quicker each day.

This event runs from the 11th to 20th October. And it covers around 100 different locations which are illuminated every day from 7pm until midnight.

For ten nights, the Festival of Lights completely transforms Berlin’s most well-known landmarks, monuments, buildings and neighbourhoods with light and video art projections. The participating monuments are mainly in the city centre. PLaces such Brandenburg Gate, Leipziger Platz, Berliner Dom, Postdamer Platz, Funkturm, among others, are usually on the list.

Local as well as international artists use this unique opportunity to show their temporary light art works by transforming the city into a huge stage. The Berlin Festival of Lights connects diverse cultures and people throughout the world. Because there is only one language when it comes to looking at pretty lights!

2019 Motto: “Lights of freedom”

Without light, there is no life. Does that explain our fascination with this brilliant festival? This is why we each festival in Berlin features lights – so now wee even have a dedicated festival for lights themselves!

This year, we are celebrating this year the 15th anniversary of the festival. 15 years of the Festival of Lights in Berlin! The theme for the festival is guided by the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. In this way, light projections will tell touching and emotional stories of the past.

Do you want to see your photo on the iconic TV Tower? ‘Faces of Freedom’ will project people’s photos on the TV Tower in a huge format for 10 seconds. During the festival, all the photos will be brought together to create a big collage. It is easy to be part of this initiative: send your photo or your 10-second video and you will appear on the TV Tower!

More than just light projections

There are also some special events taking place during the Festival of Lights. This includes art and music events, photography workshops, open houses at selected buildings, and charity events.
