What is an intensive course?

For those of us that need a little push, an intensive course is the solution. Other types of courses are held for shorter class lengths or only held on a few days every week. Learning in high school or grade school is sporadic and inconsistent, which leads to our knowledge and mastery of the language to be the same. Taking an intensive German course in Berlin has proved to be significantly more beneficial. DAS Akademie is right in the centre of Berlin, and is only 10 minutes on foot to Alexanderplatz.

So what is an intensive course and what makes it successful?

Duration of Intensive German Classes in Berlin

First and foremost, not all intensive courses are the same. Typically courses begin in the summer as younger students have a break and have the availability and free time to focus on the course. Intensive courses typically comprise of 20 lessons, which take between 2 and 4 weeks to complete. Intensive courses can range from 1-10 weeks per level. They can have different focuses. Some focus on grammar, conversation, or vocabulary, but it is often a combination of them all. The main key characteristic of an intensive course is namely that they teach you a lot in a minimal amount of time. They all include reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension. A few intensive courses include language immersion as a learning technique. For a more relaxed pace, check out our evening German course Berlin.

DAS Akademie offers the so called “1 year intensive German course” or “visa courses” in Berlin, Germany from 1 week up to 40 weeks. These intensive classes run from Monday to Friday in the mornings. In this way, students can complete 1 sub-level in 4 weeks and move onto the next sub-level straight away. Interactive classes enhance language immersion and include a high degree of participation. In addition, students can opt for Intensive Plus, which includes more lessons through the addition of evening classes, or Intensive Special, which includes private instruction. Many courses are also cheaper the more weeks you book. Our school offers custom length programs as well, and some of the German intensive courses are organised by age.

Built for Success in Language Exams

Why the differences? Because students have different goals and reasons for taking a language course. It can depend on the environment, as students spend a lot of time together, as well as with their teacher. Another key difference is exam preparation. Different schools offer distinct certificates and test preparation. Many courses are structured toward the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and prepare for the TestDaF or an international standard language certificate such as the Cambridge Certificate. Different schools specialise in their respective teaching method, for example the highly successful immersion method used at DAS Akademie. That being said, intensive courses are best for ambitious and motivated students. They require much more time and effort than other courses. But for a quicker and more successful language-learning experience, an intensive course is the best option. With an intensive course, becoming bi-, tri-, or multi-lingual is possible!
